Is Anesthesia a Must within the Cataract Surgery Steps? 

Usually, eye surgeons resort to local anesthesia in order to numb the eye for the surgical procedure to go smoothly.
While most Cataract cases get numbed with eye drops, some other cases require injection around the eye.
Although patients are awake during the process, they will not feel any of the steps taking
place as they have been numbed.
Moreover, depending on the case, Ophthalmologists decide if there is a need for datives
or mild anesthesia to keep the patients calm.

Are the Incision and Cataract Removal Two Separate Cataract Surgery Steps? 

In order to extract the Cataract from the refractive eye, the ophthalmologists need to create an incision,
measuring around  2-3 mm.
This incision usually happens at the edge of the Cornea, which assists with reaching the Cataract lens.
While eye surgeons are used to using blades for this incision, nowadays,
most surgeons resort to using lasers to perform this incision.

After the incision is done, ultrasound waves are used in order to break up the Cataract effect taking over the eye.
These waves break the Cataract into smaller pieces which assist with easier extraction.
In the old days, eye surgeons used to do manual removal, and this still happens until this day,
but it depends on the need and criticality of the Cataract case. 

What Is IOL?

Once the Cataract is removed, the cataract area is replaced with a clear lens, which is known as IOL.
This lens functions to restore the vision; the type of this lens is determined as per the medical
needs of the patient’s eye.
Before getting placed, the lens is folded, and it automatically unfolds once placed inside the eye.
