Ophthalmology Technician Training

What Are the Major Key Aspects in an Ophthalmology Technician Training

Optic Anatomy and Physiology:

In order to assist eye doctors within the diagnosis and setting a treatment path, it is mandatory to be fully familiar
with the anatomy of the eye and the function of every part.
Additionally, the ophthalmology technician training provides the trainees with a curriculum about the diseases
that can affect vision as it is  essential for the technician’s role.

Clinical Skills:

Since the Ophthalmology Technician’s role is clinic based, it is a must to be efficient and equipped
with the required clinical skills.
Within the Ophthalmology technician training, technicians are trained on Tonometry,
which is the methodology to measure intraocular pressure.
This assists with the  glaucoma detection.
Additionally, they get trained on Refraction, which determines the prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
To test the sharpness of the vision, technicians get trained on Visual Acuity Testing.
The Ophthalmology technician training also trains the Ophthalmology technicians on using the clinical
fundus camera in order to check on retina and optic nerve.
It is no surprise when they need to get trained on the various clinical skills, this includes being efficient
with the different medical equipment. For instance, they need to be efficient with Autorefractors, Slit Lamps, and OCT Scanners.

Social Interactions:

Being within a medical environment forces you to be in continuous interaction with patients.
When you are an Ophthalmology technician you must find your way when socializing with patients
as you need to interact with them professionally yet friendly at the same time.
As an Ophthalmology technician, you are responsible for interacting with the patient to know their medical history.
Additionally, you are required to explain for them the surgical procedure when needed.
Therefore you need to be trained on delivering the medical information simply as well as in an empathetic manner.
The patient’s comfort mainly relied on your approach with them. Therefore, Ophthalmology technician training
ensures that its trainees are socially well trained.

eye diseases and conditions.

and Dry Eye complications.
Furthermore, Ophthalmology technicians need to be aware of the ophthalmological, medical terminology.
Through this training, they learn the vocabulary related to medical concepts.
This is mandatory to interact with other doctors, ophthalmologists, and health professionals as well.
